Nice post.

I think it is important to note that in both business models it is important to have an active community, otherwise the development costs of the software become too high. For this reason deliberately hobbling the community edition is not a good strategy.

Also, companies using the services-only model are not motivated to make the software easy to use, as this reduces the need for services. In the business intelligence market there are 4 commercial open source companies - 3 of them use the open core model and one uses the services model. The open source software from the company using the services model is widely regarded as being the hardest to install and configure.
