SDL International to Acquire Tridion

SDL International just announced that they will acquire Tridion. This is very interesting news because The Netherlands based Tridion seems poised to make quite an impact on the North American mid level WCM market. They have just started to aggressively market in the States and the product is already popping up on selection short lists that typically include Ektron and SiteCore. SDL is a combination software/services company focused on global information management. Not long ago, they acquired Trados.

As SDL CEO Mark Lancaster just put it in his keynote at Tridion World, addressing Tridion customers, “you bought it because you thought it was the best product – so did we, but for you it was a lot cheaper” ;) In the short term, there shouldn’t be a lot of consequences for Tridion’s U.S. activities… or so both CEO’s claim ;)

The SDL/Tridion news caught my eye too, and for obvious reasons I felt compelled to comment. You’ll see on my posting on our blog (http://www.idiominc.com/blog/) that we’ve seen an ecosystem building where open architectures have created an environment where CMS vendors, LSP partners and others can co-exist and be profitable. We’re curious about how this news will play out over the next week or so, especially how our customers and partners are responding. We’ve seen some interesting comments already, such as Tony Byrne’s, and we look forward to being part of this industry discussion.
